There are many non-partisan organizations formed to provide voters with the information needed to educate themselves so that they can make intelligent and values-based voting decisions. One that I have been impressed by and supportive of is Project Vote Smart. Presidents Ford and Carter sat on its original Board, as have Senators as diverse as Barry Goldwater and George McGovern. Oodles of data about elected officials and candidates are available on its website. Voters too often have difficulty finding out how candidates stand on various issues. If you have taken the time to write to elected officials, I'm sure you have been frustrated at times with wishy-washy replies which reveal nothing about the representative's position on your issue. Replies such as "I'll be sure to keep your thoughts in mind" and/or a recitation of the two sides of an issue too often substitute for the politician actually taking a stand. To help voters know where candidates stand, Project Vote Smart for many years has sent candidates issues questionnaires. A few years back, the name of these questionnaires was changed to the Political Courage Test since so few incumbents showed the courage to answer the questions. The Political Courage Test will not be sent to the 15 Senate race contenders. Rather, it will be sent after the August 17 primary to the top two who advance to the general election. If current polls hold, that will be Patty Murray and Dino Rossi. If past history is a guide, both will refuse to answer. Dino Rossi refused to provide responses during his races for Governor. Search for Patty Murray's test responses and you will find: Senator Patty Murray REPEATEDLY REFUSED TO PROVIDE ANY RESPONSES TO CITIZENS ON ISSUES I believe you have an absolute right to know where I stand on the issues. Most of the questions on the test involve simple yes-no answers to "I support" statements. Others relate to various categories of raising or lowering spending levels and taxes. The twelve issue areas and my answers to them follow on the right hand side of the page: |
